Family law, divorce and the kids

Given that the Family Law Act came into force on March 18, parents in British Columbia should be aware of the changes in legislation regarding parenting and the provisions regarding the inclusion of children’s input into parenting arrangements.

Christine Murray practices family law and has experience in litigation, negotiation, mediation and collaborative family law.  She joins us to answer questions regarding the Family Law Act and to take your calls on custody issues, separation and how the kids are affected. Tune in this Saturday, March 30 at 12pm on CFAX 1070 and call us during the show with your questions: 250-386-1161.

Problem behaviours and practical strategies

Jamie Clegg and Kate Evans will be speaking at the upcoming Making Tomorrow Conference on April 27. They join me in the studio this week to talk about their workshop, “Reasons for problem behaviour- Probable causes and a toolbox for educators.”

The Making Tomorrow Conference website describes the workshop: “Children who engage in persistent problem behaviours are at risk of academic failure, social isolation, and emotional instability. Yet parents and educators are often at a loss as to why they behave as they do, or how best to help them. In this workshop we will discuss the reasons children engage in problem behaviours and explore a variety of practical strategies to reduce their occurrence in homes and classrooms.”

Jamie Clegg is a high school teacher who has spent the past 12 years working with high risk youth at Pacific Secondary, an alternative school in Sooke.  He is the father of 11 and 19 year old daughters and an 8 year old son who has autism.  In his spare time, Jamie referees basketball and is currently completing his Master’s degree in Special Education, with an emphasis in autism and other developmental disabilities.

Kate Evans has spent over 25 years working with children with problem behaviour in a variety of roles, including as an educational assistant, teacher on call, and special needs early childhood educator.  She currently works as an educational assistant at Ledger School, a Provincial Resource Program that operates within an inpatient psychiatric assessment centre.  She is the mother of two daughters, one who has Asperger’s.  She is completing a Master’s degree in Special Education, with an emphasis in autism and other developmental disabilities
