PARTYing at VGH
I visited the morgue at Victoria General Hospital and it was not pleasant. It was cold and sad. Why did I go there? To PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth)
The PARTY program educates teens about the realities of what can happen when people drink or text and drive. It consists of several workshops and gives grade 10 students in Greater Victoria a glimpse into what nurses and doctors are witness to at the hospital and what trauma victims and their loved ones experience. Unfortunately, sometimes teens end up in the morgue, so visiting this room is one of the pit stops the program takes.
Tune in to CFAX 1070 this Saturday at 12pm for my discussion with PARTY program planner Lorna Bennett and Police Sergeant Nick Ross.
Gardening with kids
Summer is FINALLY here and many of us Vancouver Islanders are digging into our gardens. Watching things grow can be a lot of fun for kids too! Joining me in the studio, Nadine Collison and Ashley Evans share great tips for getting kids involved!
Nadine Collison pursued a Masters of Environmental Studies with a concentration on Non-profit Management and community involvement from York University. Now in Victoria, Nadine’s environmental background supports her work at the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre. She enjoys teaching her son Cole all the wonderful things about composting and gardening- from red wrigglers to red raspberries and from green lettuces to green roofs.
Ashley Evans is a mother, writer, blogger, student, traveler, raw foodie and baking enthusiast. She weaves the joy and passion of motherhood at Pax On The Island and is a regular contributor at Chatterblock, including her recent article on Gardening with kids.
