Although not the most used topic, sewer or septic systems are absolutely vital to a healthy, happy, and sanitary life. There have been many, many technological and scientific developments in the past century or 2, not the least of which is how we dispose of our waste. We have likely heard of the nothing short of awful methods many countries around the world employed in the preceding centuries, but it gives us something to be grateful for if nothing else!
In truth, many epidemics and plagues throughout the 1800s and before this too, have been due to inefficient or occasionally just plain revolting sewer methods. Diseases like cholera, typhoid, yellow fever, and even malaria are but a few examples of what may happen when waste isn’t properly disposed of. Mosquitos are not merely accountable for many of these diseases, but interestingly, flourish big-time in sewage-contaminated bodies of water as opposed to purer sources.
Studies have proven that mosquitos that are bred in polluted water develop larger, fly faster, and have an overall lower mortality rate than their more inferior counterparts bred in cleaner water. Even the”nutrient-enriched” water containing large quantities of ammonia phosphates and other minerals abundant in sewage serve to feed the bacteria and microorganisms that mosquito larvae consume, pumped up their diet, which makes them healthier and more robust. The hunt for ideal waste disposal methods is something man has been up against since the beginning of time. We’ve certainly come a long way since our ancestors dug holes as their solution, but there is still much we can learn from how things were done. Hey, when it comes down to it, a hole in the floor remains the first thing most people would think of if there wasn’t a bathroom available! Ok, let’s talk about options, assuming modern take-it-for-granted city plumbing is not among them:
– A hole in the floor right outside your kitchen window.
– A pit in the ground about 30 meters to the woods behind your cottage.
– A pipe leading from your in-house bathroom right out for the front road. (History folks!)
– A septic system.
Given the choices over, a septic system is probably the method of choice if town sewers weren’t offered. – Providing you have some kind of environmental conscience that wouldn’t allow you to simply funnel your sewage down to the closest river. A septic system consists of several important elements which collectively, break down your sewer for the security deposit back into the groundwater. The machine starts with piping which leads from your bathroom to an underground septic tank. This tank is the initial stage of decomposition where the heavier solids settle to the bottom and the lighter”scum” floats to the surface. Tanks frequently have two compartments with a dividing wall between them. The liquid part of the waste will then flow to the next chamber where further settling will take place. This process is then followed by what is called a leach field.
A leach area is a section of land that’s used to wash the effluent as it makes its way down through the layers of dirt, and eventually to the groundwater. An expected leach field must fulfill specific”percolation requirements” before being deemed appropriate. If the soil is too porous – too much sand and gravel – it will not effectively”hold” and deactivate the harmful pathogens, and conversely, when the dirt isn’t porous enough – like a lot of clay – it won’t permit the percolation of wastewater at the desired rate.
Tests that are done on the ground for this purpose are called”percolation tests”. The magnitude of a certain leach area is proportional to the quantity of incoming wastewater and inversely proportional to the porosity of its soil. Imagine a leach field for a system of perforated pipes stretched out over a broad area of land. These pipes are usually buried beneath a layer of soil and dirt to prevent critters from getting. In a well-made leach field, gravity will more or less evenly disperse the effluent load through its piping.
Back in the septic tank, the heavier solids have been decomposed via anaerobic digestion. What the hell is that? Well, it is rather what makes this whole system even remotely effective. An anaerobic environment is what naturally occurs within a septic tank when waste is released. It is the bacteria that instantly starts eating away at pretty much anything that enters the tank.
One factor to remember though is a septic system can’t run on auto-pilot eternally. It needs to be regularly maintained for this to continue to run efficiently. There are definite”irreducible” solids which will remain in the tank, and that will gradually collect, causing a flow of the same in the leach field. An overflow of those solids will clog your drain area and also cost a right arm to repair.
Other precautions regarding septic systems involve what you can safely flush down your toilet or drains – if other sinks are also attached.
– Non-biodegradable substances such as cigarette butts, hygiene products, non-biodegradable toilet paper, etc can not be decomposed bacterially, and can only build-up, resulting in clogging, overflow, and early failure of the septic system.
– Oils and greases are more challenging to decompose and may cause clogging and excessive stinking if larger quantities are disposed of.
– Disinfectants, bleaches, and substances of any type possess the capability to destroy the anaerobic environment. Do not flush these into your tank!
As a rule, only dump what’s absolutely essential and nothing more. Maintain the septic system for your sewer and utilize other methods such as composting etc for additional organic waste rather than using garbage disposers. Perform periodic maintenance on your own septic system and also have your tank emptied on a regular basis – periods are based on the size of your tank, the number of users, and your faithfulness – or lack of it in keeping the instructions.
