Barry MacDonald: Male underachievement & helping boys thrive

The problem of male underachievement is persistent and hard to ignore. In nearly every academic and behavioural marker, boys and young men are struggling. Boys account for 80% of children diagnosed with ADHD, 80% of school suspensions, 90% of juvenile alcohol and drug violations, and 3 out of 4 suicides. Would we not see such numbers as troubling if they represented girls? Being a boy is not a social disease.

How can we foster engagement, achievement, and well-being among boys? Barry MacDonald is an educator and counselor who is passionate about engaging all learners in a rapidly changing world, particularly boys who flounder in traditional classroom learning. As the founder of MentoringBoys.com and the best-selling author of Boy Smarts, and Boys on Target: Raising Boys into Men of Courage and Compassion he is called on as an authority to help parents and school staff respond to the diverse needs of boys.

Ann Douglas: End of school year survival

Ann Douglas is a renowned Canadian parenting educator & author of numerous books about pregnancy and parenting. The books in The Mother of All series have sold over half a million copies in North America to date. Her most recent book – for parents who have a child with a mental illness – will be published by HarperCollins Canada in January 2015.

Ann joins the show this week to discuss end-of-school year parenting challenges: How some kids lose their focus once the nice weather arrives (and how parents & teachers can help with that); how anxiety about changes over the summer or at school next year can be a problem for some kids: and why it is a good idea to start thinking about the parenting challenges that summer presents including changes to the schedule/routine.
