Unclutter your kids! + Family Literacy Day

by shirley on January 21, 2011

Family Literacy Day is coming up Jan. 27, and to kick start the celebration I will be chatting with Tammy Moore and Tanya Demmings from Read Society this Saturday, Jan. 22 on Real Parenting.

Family Literacy Day is an annual initiative developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage parents and children to spend at least 15 minutes daily enjoying a learning activity together.

Teachers at the READ Society regularly use games to help students learn and improve their literacy skills. “Playing games is a great way to sneak in learning – and it’s especially good for wiggly children who are in the process of developing their attention spans,” says Tammy Moore, child, youth and volunteer program coordinator.

On Real Parenting this Saturday at 10am on CFAX 1070, we’ll discuss what parents can do to encourage literacy in a fun way, plus chat about the Literacy Day event that Read Society has planned for Sunday, Jan. 30 from 1-5pm at Ruth King School in Colwood, B.C. Know of a literacy event in your community? Add a comment & leave the info below!

Need to Unclutter your home, family & kids?

Then at 10:30am my guest will be Erin Doland, Editor-in-Chief of Unclutterer. She lives in the Washington, D.C. area and was once a pack rat who held on to objects like her third grade math assignments and every note she passed in high school. Erin is also the author of Unclutter Your Life in One Week.

We’ll discuss age-appropriate uncluttering techniques & methods to use with our children, how to decide what to keep, scheduling uncluttering into our family calendar & more!

Stream the show live on CFAX 1070 this Saturday, Jan. 22 from 10-11am PST.

Hi All!

Shirley invited me to let readers know about one of the Family Literacy Day initiatives we’re having in Nanaimo on Jan. 27.

It’s the #ReadUPTweetUP – a kid friendly Tweetup of Nanaimo social media enthusiasts who are also enthusiastic about the promotion of literacy for our kids and our community.

The Nanaimo Museum has generously provided the venue.

With three kids of reading age (all avid story readers, listerners and tellers!) I am so pleased to see so many people like the folks associated with this blog, for example, who have taken the time to promote such a worthy initiative – the education of our kids!

If you’d like to take a look at our event, you can find more info (and RSVP if you’re going to be in Nanaimo on Jan. 27) here: http://twvt.us/ReadUPTweetUP

Thanks and good fortune!

In addition to the event organized by the Read Society, families can join us for a #ReadUp Tweetup for literacy, hosted by Tall Tale Books (795 Fort Street, Victoria) on Saturday January 29th from 11am to 1pm.

This free, fun filled family event will feature story tellers, activity tables, a scavenger hunt and light refreshments.

The #ReadUp Tweetup was sparked by Kim Plumley of Nanaimo. Kim encouraged Victoria’s Twitter community to get involved, and Janis La Couvée approached Tall Tale Books. “Tall Tales Books has a very active social media presence and had already organized a tweetup among their regular events for families, so they were the perfect fit.” says La Couvée.

Organizers would like to emphasize that the event is open to ALL families, not only those using the popular micro-blogging platform. “We want everyone who has a love of books to feel welcome at this event.” states Drew Lorimer Tall Tales owner.

Families are encouraged to bring gently used books for donation to the Read Society, ICA Victoria and the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society.
